A few weeks ago I made a purchase through Strictly Medicinal Seeds and am feeling elated and overwhelmed at the possibilities that they will bring. This past Monday the first package came and contained one live comfrey taproot and 2 packets of bonus seeds. At first I had forgotten that I ordered a live plant root. Planting in upstate NY in February is not possible unless you have a greenhouse. I do not have one and was a little worried about what I was going to do with it.
Luckily they sent instructions that were easy to follow and mentioned what to do if the ground was still frozen in my area. It said that comfrey is a cold hardy plant that can survive in a pot outside. So plant it, mulch it, and leave it until the ground is ready to plant. Cool, cool, cool... what kind of mulch?
Full disclosure, despite my love of gardening, I do not have the greenest thumb. Every plant has a different set of needs and it is a lot to remember. When I think of mulch my mind immediately goes to the soggy wood chips people toss in their flower beds but that didn't feel right. So I reached out to my gardening friends who explained that the goal was to insulate the pot; so mulch could mean a lot of different things. One of them suggested I simply bury the pot in the snow because snow can be very insulating. Think cozy snow forts and igloos. I buried it in a sunny but sheltered area in my yard that afternoon. Good luck little taproot. I hope you make it.
The bonus seed packets contained Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) and Vana Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum), two plants I am excited to learn more about. I will post as the seeds come, discuss the best growing practices, how to harvest, and how use them. All the seeds coming are beautiful as well as medicinal. I look forward to sharing my gardening adventures with you.
